French woman awarded disability grant for electromagnetic hypersensitivity.An unexpected side effect of growing up in a digital world could be a “gadget allergy.” Many people claim to have the condition, aka electromagnetic hypersensitivity, but science has yet to declare it a proper disorder. That didn’t stop a court in France from awarding a disability grant to Marine Richards for the condition -- though the ruling leaves room for debate about the status of electromagnetic hypersensitivity as an illness.

others affected by electromagnetic hypersensitivity say the waves from cellphones, televisions, Wi-Fi and other electronic devices can cause nausea, headaches, fatigue, tingling sensations and heart palpitations. Richards quit her job and moved to a remote location in southwest France because of her symptoms, according to Agence France-Presse.

“For some time, a number of individuals have reported a variety of health problems that they relate to exposure to EMF [electromagnetic fields]. While some individuals report mild symptoms and try to avoid the fields as best they can, others are so severely affected that they cease work and change their entire lifestyle. This reputed sensitivity to EMF has been generally termed “electromagnetic hypersensitivity” or “EHS,” the World Health Organization says of the possible illness.

Per the court ruling, Richards had symptoms that prevented her from working, but it did not say electromagnetic hypersensitivity was an illness or caused her symptoms, AFP reported.

The condition got some exposure on AMC’s hit “Breaking Bad” spinoff, “Better Call Saul,” which had a character who suffered from the alleged allergy. Chuck McGill, played by Michael McKean, lives without electricity and uses a foil space blanket, according to the Guardian. His character led to an examination of the gadget allergy by the news outlet and experts were firmly on the side of “not real.” A study looked at 46 double-blind studies -- where neither the scientists nor the participants know what is being administered -- involving 1,175 people who have electromagnetic hypersensitivity. “No robust evidence could be found to support this theory. However, the studies included in the review did support the role of the nocebo effect in triggering acute symptoms in IEI-EMF sufferers,” the study’s abstract said. Nocebo is the opposite of a placebo, where a person experiences negative symptoms instead of positive symptoms.

Despite what the studies conclude, many people claim to be affected by electromagnetic fields. The parents of a 12-year-old boy filed a lawsuit against a school in Massachusetts because the child was experiencing headaches, nosebleeds and other symptoms after the school boosted its Wi-Fi signal.

Green Bank, West Virginia, has become a safe haven for people with electromagnetic hypersensitivity because it’s inside the U.S. National Radio Quiet Zone. All technology is banned due to the extremely sensitive Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope. Astronomers are using the radio telescope to listen to the faint traces of the Milky Way’s evolution. Any interference can disrupt their work, which means cellphones and even non-diesel cars -- spark plugs can be noisy -- are banned.

Prior to electromagnetic hypersensitivity, the mysterious Multiple Chemical Sensitivity were causing symptoms in people while science said there was zero evidence of this condition. Despite the science, MCS sufferers banded together to live in a chemical-free town. Snowflake, Arizona, features homes made of ceramic or concrete and some MCS sufferers also experience electromagnetic hypersensitivity.

전자파 과민증을 호소하던 프랑스 여성이 장애수당 지급 판결 받아디지털 세계에서의 삶에는 예상치 못한 부작용이 하나 따른다. ‘디지털 기기 알레르기’가 생길 수 있다는 점이다. 일명 ‘전자파 과민증’으로 불리는 이 같은 증상을 호소하는 사람이 많다. 하지만 의학적으론 아직 정식 질병으로 인정되지 않았다. 그럼에도 불구하고 프랑스의 한 법원은 최근 그런 증상을 보이는 마린 리샤르에게 장애 보조수당을 지급하라고 판결했다. 하지만 그 판결은 전자파 과민증을 질병으로 인정해야 하느냐를 두고 논란의 여지를 남겼다.

라디오 다큐멘터리 프로듀서 출신의 리샤르를 비롯해 전자파 과민증을 앓는 사람들은 휴대전화·TV·와이파이 그리고 기타 전자기기의 전파가 욕지기, 두통, 피로감, 손발 저림 그리고 심장의 두근거림을 유발할 수 있다고 말한다. AFP 통신에 따르면 리샤르는 그런 증상 때문에 직장을 그만두고 프랑스 남서부의 오지로 이주했다.

“한동안 전자파(EMF)에의 노출이 원인이라며 갖가지 건강이상을 호소하는 사람이 많았다. 증상이 가벼워 가능한 한 전자파를 피하려 애쓰는 사람들이 있는 반면 증세가 심각해 직장을 그만두고 생활방식을 완전히 바꾸는 사람도 있다. 이처럼 EMF 과민반응으로 알려진 현상은 일반적으로 ‘전자파 과민증(EHS)’으로 불려 왔다고 세계보건기구(WHO)가 말했다.

법원 판결과 관련해, 리샤르의 증상은 일을 계속하기 어려운 수준이었다고 AFP는 보도했다. 하지만 전자파 과민증이 질병이라거나 그녀의 증상을 유발했다고 판결문에 적시되지는 않았다고 덧붙였다.

AMC 채널의 인기 프로그램 ‘브레이킹 배드’의 속편 ‘베터 콜사울’에 그런 증상이 약간 소개됐다. 드라마에서 한 등장인물이 그런 전자파 알레르기 증상을 보였다. 마이클 맥킨이 연기하는 처크 맥길은 전기 없이 생활하고 알루미늄 호일 담요를 사용한다. 영국 일간지 가디언이 검증 차원에서 디지털 기기 알레르기에 대한 조사를 실시했다. 전문가들은 확실히 ‘사실이 아니다’는 입장을 보였다. 전자파 민감증을 보이는 1175명을 대상으로 실시한 46건의 이중맹검 조사를 리뷰한 결과도 있었다(이중맹검은 연구자나 피험자 모두에게 내용을 알려주지 않고 실시하는 조사 방식이다). “이 이론을 뒷받침하는 확실한 증거는 발견되지 않았다. 그러나 분석 대상에 포함된 연구들은 노시보 효과의 역할을 뒷받침했다. 특발성환경불내증(IEI-EMF) 환자에게 급성 증상을 촉발하는 효과”라고 분석 보고서는 밝혔다. 플라시보(위약효과)의 반대 개념인 노시보는 같은 실험에서 긍정적인 증상 대신 부정적인 증상을 나타내는 효과를 말한다.

그런 결과에도 불구하고 전자파의 영향을 받는다고 주장하는 사람이 많다. 한 12세 소년의 부모는 미국 매사추세츠주의 학교를 상대로 소송을 제기했다. 학교에서 와이파이 신호 강도를 높인 뒤 두통, 코피 등의 증상이 나타났다는 이유다.

웨스트버지니아주의 그린 뱅크는 전자파 과민증을 앓는 사람들의 피난처가 됐다. 미국 ‘국가지정 전파규제지역’ 내에 있기 때문이다. 극도로 민감한 ‘로버트 C 버드 그린 뱅크 망원경’으로 인해 첨단기술은 모두 금지되는 곳이다. 천문학자들이 그 전파망원경을 이용해 은하수 진화의 희미한 흔적을 탐지한다. 조금이라도 방해 받으면 조사를 망칠 수 있다. 휴대전화와 비(非)디젤 차량(점화 플러그의 소음이 원인)까지 금지된다는 의미다.

전자파 과민증상 전에는 불가해한 ‘화학물질 과민증(MCS)’으로 고통 받는 사람들도 있었다. 한편 학계에선 모두 근거 없는 증상이라는 입장을 보인다. 학계의 과학적인 판정에도 불구하고 MCS 피해자들은 화학물질 청정도시에 모여 산다. 애리조나주 스노플레이크에는 세라믹 또는 콘크리트 소재의 주택이 많이 들어섰다. 그리고 MCS 피해자 중 일부는 전자파에도 과민증을 나타낸다.
