schedule의 올바른 용법

한국어로 스케줄이란 단어를 쓸 때 일정 전체가 아닌 일정 중에 한 건 한 건을 뜻하는 듯하다. 하지만 영어에서 schedule은 일정이 잡힌 일 하나하나가 아니라 일정 전체를 통틀어 말한다. 그래서 schedules(복수)를 쓰는 경우는 극히 드물고 일정 중 하나를 말할 때는 an item, an appointment, something scheduled, something to do 등으로 달리 표현한다. K-pop 영문 사이트와 한국인이 영어로 올린 댓글에서 잘못 쓴 문장, 그리고 같은 말을 제대로 쓴 예문을 비교해 보자.

그 가수는 일본에 스케줄이 있어서 시상식에

참석하지 못했다.

App Store. (O)schedule application은 틀린 표현은 아니지만 영어권 원어민들은 주로 scheduler 또는 calendar application(program)이라고 한다. 또 한 가지 주의할 점은 비록 한국말로 ‘어플’이라고 하지만 application과 app의 a자 발음은 ‘어’가 아닌 ‘애’에 가깝다.
