In Reno, Nevada, as the campaign entered the final week, John Kerry was given a hero’s welcome. A crowd of nearly 20,000 packed into an arena at the University of Nevada and rose to their feet as one at the mention of his name. When the applause finally died down, Kerry launched into a long and rambling speech, one of his most soporific in weeks. A simple line in his prepared text on the need to fix Social Security became a five-minute explanation of how the system got broken. He gave the same prolix treatment to health care, with a strange overreaching assertion that the Bush health-care plan was “killing millions of Americans. ” A 25-minute speech went on for close to an hour. Kerry knew that he had regressed. Walking off the stage, he turned to his daughter Vanessa and said, “I went too long, didn’t I?” Vanessa just nodded. She was trying not to criticize too much. Sometimes she would say, “Love ya, dude, but that was too long. ”

선거운동이 마지막 주로 접어들 무렵 존 케리는 네바다주 리노에서 영웅적 환대를 받았다. 거의 2만명에 가까운 인파가 네바다 대학 체육관에 모여들어,그의 이름을 연호하면서 일제히 일어섰다. 박수가 잦아들자 케리는 길고도 좀 산만한 연설을 시작했다. 수주 동안 했던 연설 중에서 가장 졸린 것이었다. 원고에는 사회보장제도의 개선필요성이 한 줄로 간단히 언급됐지만 케리는 시스템 붕괴 원인에만 5분을 할애했다. 건강보험에 대해서도 장광설을 늘어놓고 부시의 건강보험 정책이 “수천만 미국인들을 죽이고 있다”며 도가 지나친 주장도 했다. 25분짜리 연설은 거의 1시간이 다 돼 끝났다. 케리 자신도 전보다 못하다는 생각을 했다. 무대에서 내려와 딸 바네사에게 이렇게 말했다. “너무 길었어, 그렇지?” 바네사는 고개만 끄덕였다. 딸은 너무 많은 비평을 삼갔다. 하지만 가끔 이런 말도 했다. “아빠, 좀 심하게 길었어요. ”

*rise to one’s feet: 일어서다, Ex. He rose to his feet and ran outside(그는 일어서서 밖으로 뛰어나갔다).
*rambling: 어슬렁거리는, 산만한, 두서없는, 꾸불꾸불한. Ex. Sorry, I’m rambling on. Let me get back to the point(죄송합니다, 좀 두서가 없었습니다. 다시 본론으로 들어가겠습니다).
*soporific: a. 잠이 오게 하는, 졸리는. n. 최면제. Ex. It is said that the effect of eating too much lettuce is ‘soporific’(상추를 너무 많이 먹으면 잠이 온다고 알려져 있다).
*prolix: 지루한, 장황한. Ex. He writes a prolix style(그의 문장은 너더분하다).
*overreach: 도를 지나치다, 한술 더 뜨다. Ex. The company had overreached itself and made unwise investments(그 회사는 사업분야를 지나치게 확장했고 무분별한 투자를 감행했다).
*regress: v. 퇴보하다. n. 후퇴·역행·소급. Ex. Such countries are not developing at all, but regressing(그 나라들은 전혀 발전 없이 퇴보만 하고 있다).
