A women’s rights group are planning to fly a drone carrying abortion medication across the border from Germany to Poland to distribute the pills to Polish women who have severely restricted access to terminations.

The ‘abortion drone’ is being sent by not-for-profit organization Women on Waves, which distributes medical abortion pills to women all over the world.

Abortion laws in Poland have been severely restricted since 1993. Women are allowed to have an abortion is if they are a victim of rape, incest, if the fetus is severely damaged or poses a significant risk to the health of the mother. According to a recent UN report, there are over 50,000 dangerous, underground abortions being carried out in the country each year.

Dr Rebecca Gomperts, founder and director of Dutch-based organization Women on Waves is keen to stress that the project will not be breaking the law because although those who perform abortions in Poland can be prosecuted, women are not criminalized for taking the abortion pill. Gomperts says this means “the drone can deliver the medication directly to women in Poland who need it, safely”.

She adds that taking the abortion pill, which is free and available to women under nine weeks pregnant in Germany, “will not result in any criminalization of women, even if they have to seek medical help should complications during the termination”.

But Gomperts admits that the main purpose of the drone is symbolic. “We are only looking at a few women at the moment, combining the delivery of legal services whilst also hoping to raise awareness of the social injustice experienced by women in countries where abortion is illegal.” — EILISH O’GARA 한 여성인권단체가 독일에서 드론(무인기)에 낙태약을 실어 국경 넘어 폴란드로 보낼 계획이다. 낙태권의 엄격한 제한을 받는 폴란드 여성에게 도움을 주기 위해서다. 이 ‘낙태 드론’은 세계 각지의 여성들에게 낙태약을 보급하는 네덜란드의 비영리단체 위민 온 웨이브스가 날려 보낸다.

폴란드는 1993년 이후 법으로 낙태를 엄격하게 제한했다. 성폭행이나 근친상간으로 인한 임신, 또는 태아가 심각하게 손상을 입었거나 산모의 건강을 위협하는 경우에만 낙태가 허용된다. 최근 유엔 보고서에 따르면 폴란드에선 매년 5만여 건의 위험한 불법 낙태가 이뤄진다.

위민 온 웨이브스의 설립자이자 대표인 의사 레베카 곰페르츠는 이 프로젝트가 법에 위촉되지 않는다고 말했다. 폴란드에서 낙태하는 여성은 기소당할 가능성이 있지만 낙태약을 복용하는 것은 불법이 아니기 때문이다. 곰페르츠는 따라서 “드론이 낙태약을 필요로 하는 폴란드 여성에게 그 약을 직접 안전하게 배달할 수 있다”고 말했다.

그녀는 “낙태 과정에서 합병증으로 인해 의술이 필요할 할 수도 있지만 폴란드 여성의 낙태 약 복용은 범법 행위가 아니다”고 덧붙였다(독일에선 임신 9주 미만의 여성은 무료로 지급받을 수 있다). 하지만 곰페르츠는 ‘낙태 드론’ 프로젝트가 실질적 효과보다 상징적인 의미가 더 크다고 인정했다. “지금 당장은 소수의 여성만을 대상으로 낙태약과 법률적 지원을 동시에 제공하는 것을 목표로 한다. 하지만 우리는 이 프로젝트가 낙태를 불법으로 규정하는 국가에서 여성이 경험하는 사회적 부당성에 대한 인식을 높이는 계기가 되기를 바란다.”
