[Young journalist Choi Jion] Global investment bank (IB) analyzed that the KOSPI shows signs of a significant bubble, as it is currently experiencing sharp swings. 

U.S. financial media reported on March 11th that the Korean stock market’s rapid fluctuation from last week shows ‘classic bubble behavior,’ citing Bank of America (BofA).

The KOSPI’s 12% plunge followed by a 10% rebound is similar to the instability that occurred during the Asian Financial Crisis, Dot-com Bubble, and 2008 Global Financial Crisis.

BofA argues that the current KOSPI is closer to 1 on the ‘bubble risk indicator,’ which measures stock market bubbles. 

While the indicator represents the returns on assets, fluctuations, momentum, vulnerability, etc., combined into a scale 0 to 1, it indicates more extreme bubble-like price movements as it approaches 1. 

It explains that domestic individual investors who are actively participating in leveraged and inverse exchange-traded funds (ETF) have fueled this trend. 

Bofa has stated that “Active participation by individual investors, which led the recent historic growth, is reversing and showing a typical bubble environment observed in the Kospi last week.” 

Moreover, it pointed out that KOSPI is at an even higher level than extremely overheated assets such as gold, Brent Crude, and Bloomberg Commodity Index. That said, this is an analysis made before recent swings in oil prices.
