Cybercrime, brogrammer, revenge porn and smartwatch.When online dictionary users see the “Did you mean” autocorrect message, it could mean they’ve simply misspelled a word. Often, however, it means the words they’re searching for are so new that lexicographers, the people who compile dictionaries, haven’t caught on yet. The people behind Dictionary.com say they watch over those autocorrected entries, looking for new words or old ones that have taken on new cultural significance.

About four times a year, the dictionary attempts to play catch-up with a language that is constantly changing. Each update contains a few thousand entries. Among the latest additions: cybercrime, brogrammer, revenge porn and smartwatch.

“If you are a lexicographer working for Dictionary.com, you are constantly, as you go about the world, looking up [words] to see, do we have that?” says Jane Solomon, a senior content editor at the site. “There is never an end to the work of the lexicographer.”

Solomon says there are no restrictions to the words they will consider. “As far as we’re concerned, Dictionary.com is a very inclusive dictionary,” she says. “We have slang, we have slurs, we have the most offensive words in English, but also as we add those very offensive words, we like to make sure that we give some context.”

The new update includes words related to technology, gaming, cybercrime, pop culture and politics. There’s a new meaning for basic, defined as “characterized by predictable or unoriginal style, interests or behavior”, and dark web, “the portion of the Internet that is intentionally hidden from search engines”. New additions also include politically charged terms such as microaggression, “a subtle but offensive comment or action directed at a minority or other nondominant group”, and agender, bigender and gender-fluid.

“We think of updates to the dictionary not only as an opportunity to add slang words that people are confused about and that will grab headlines, but also add words that are really troubling people,” says Rebekah Otto, director of content for the website.

Online dictionaries seem to be competing for the most relevant entries. Last year, Oxford Dictionaries added duck face, humblebrag, binge-watch and YOLO. Dictionary.com has those last two. Also last year, Merriam-Webster added hashtag, selfie and catfish. Dictionary.com has those as well.

Some phrases are still perhaps too new; on fleek didn’t make the cut, though Solomon and Otto say it was up for consideration.

온라인 영어사전, 끊임없이 변화하는 언어 따라잡으려 1년에 4회가량 개정해온라인 사전을 이용할 때 종종 ‘~로 (대신) 검색하시겠습니까?’라는 자동 수정 메시지가 뜬다. 단순히 단어 철자를 잘못 입력했을 수 있다. 하지만 검색하는 단어가 최근에 생겨나 사전 편찬자가 미처 따라잡지 못했을 가능성도 있다. 온라인 영어사전 Dictionary.com 편집자들은 이들 자동 수정된 항목을 검토해 새 단어 또는 새로운 문화적 의미를 띠는 기존 단어를 찾는다고 한다.

이 온라인 사전은 1년에 네 차례 정도 끊임없이 변화하는 언어를 따라잡고 있다. 한번 개정할 때마다 2000~3000개 항목이 추가된다. 최근 추가된 항목으로는 cybercrime(사이버 범죄), brogrammer(샌님이 아닌 마초 프로그래머), revenge porn(전 애인의 나체 이미지 등을 인터넷에 무단 유포하는 복수 포르노), smartwatch 등이 있다.

“Dictionary.com의 사전 편찬자라면 일상생활 속에서 항상 단어들을 관찰하며 ‘우리 사전에 실렸는가’ 확인한다”고 그 사이트의 선임 콘텐트 편집자인 제인 솔로몬이 말했다. “사전편집자의 일은 끝이 없다.”

검토 대상이 되는 단어에 제한은 없다고 솔로몬은 말한다. “우리 입장에서 볼 때 Dictionary.com은 상당히 포괄적인 사전이다. 슬랭, 욕설, 영어에서 가장 공격적인 단어가 올라 있지만 그런 공격적인 단어를 추가할 때 어느 정도 문맥을 함께 싣는다.”

최신 개정판에는 첨단기술, 게임, 사이버범죄, 대중문화, 정치와 관련된 단어들이 추가됐다. basic(‘예측 가능하거나 독창적이지 않은 스타일, 관심, 행동의 특성을 지닌’)과 dark web(‘인터넷 중 검색엔진에 의도적으로 노출시키지 않은 부분’)에는 새로운 의미가 수록됐다. 그 밖에도 microaggression(‘소수파와 기타 비주류 그룹을 겨냥한 미묘하지만 공격적인 논평이나 행동’) 같은 정치색 강한 단어와 agender(남녀 구분이 잘 안 되는), bigender(남녀 특성을 모두 지닌), gender-fluid(양성을 오가는)도 새로 추가됐다.

콘텐트 책임자 레베카 오토는 “사전 개정작업은 사람들이 혼동을 일으키고 화제가 될 만한 슬랭 단어뿐 아니라 정말로 사람들을 당혹스럽게 하는 단어들을 추가하는 기회”라고 말했다.

가장 추세와 직결되는 항목을 두고 온라인 사전들이 경쟁을 벌이는 듯하다. 옥스퍼드 사전은 duck face(입을 내민 얼굴), humblebrag(겸손한 척하며 자랑하는 행동), binge-watch(드라마 몰아보기), YOLO(인생은 한번뿐, You Only Live Once)를 추가했다(마지막 두 항목은 Dictionary.com에도 실렸다). 한편 메리엄-웹스터 사전은 지난해 hashtag(트윗 등의 주제어), selfie(셀카), catfish(SNS 사이트에 거짓 개인 프로필을 올리는 사람)를 추가했다(Dictionary.com에 모두 실렸다).

몇몇 어구는 아마도 너무 새로운 표현으로 여겨진 듯하다. on fleek(완벽하다)는 사전에 실리지 못했지만 솔로몬과 오토에 따르면 고려 대상에 올라 있다.
