Why is the Vatican called the Holy See?

As with all derivations, it helps to look for the Latin root. ?ee?comes from the word sedes, meaning the seat or residence of the bishop. The Holy See refers to the pope and the Curia, who run the church. But the Holy See and the state of Vatican City are not the same. Although a nonterritorial entity, the Holy See sends and receives diplomats and enters into treaties. Created in 1929, Vatican City provides a territorial identity for the Holy See and administers its property. And you thought religion was complicated.

영어의 어원은 대개 그 라틴어 뿌리를 찾아보면 알 수 있다. See는 주교의 자리나 소재지를 의미하는 sedes에서 나왔다. Holy See는 교황과 교황청을 모두 일컫는 용어다. 그러나 교황청과 바티칸 시티는 다르다. 교황청은 비영토적인 실체이지만 외교관을 파견하고 받아들이며 국제협약을 맺는다. 바티칸 시티는 교황청에 영토적 성격을 부여하며 그 재산을 관리하기 위해 1929년 만들어졌다. 종교는 생각보다 훨씬 복잡하다.
