Q1. done with
‘그만두다’라고 할 때는 보통 give up이나 quit를 많이 쓴다. ‘담배를 끊다’는 quit smoking이고 ‘회사를 그만두다’는 quit one's job이다. 인터뷰 질문에선 대신 done with를 사용해 “연기를 더 이상 안 할 생각이냐”고 물었다.
done with는 원래 ‘끝내다’라는 의미다. 가령 I'm done with my work now는 “이제 막 일을 끝냈다”는 뜻이고 ‘숙제를 마쳤다’는 done with homework라고 한다.
하지만 예문에서처럼 ‘관계를 끊다’는 뜻으로도 쓰인다. I뭢 done with you라고 하면 “너하고의 관계는 끝났다, 다시는 너를 보고 싶지 않다”는 의미다. done 대신 through를 써도 같은 뜻이 된다. I뭢 through with love(이제 사랑 따윈 다시 안 해).
It was easy for me to be done with pot(마리화나를 끊기는 쉬웠다).

Q2. gotten into my face
‘다가서다’는 흔히 come closer, come up to, ‘달라붙다’는 cling to, adhere to, stick to로 표현한다. 구어체에서는 같은 뜻으로 get into my face를 쓰기도 한다. get into에는 ‘~에 들어가다’는 뜻이 있다. 따라서 직역하면 ‘내 얼굴로 들어오다’가 된다. 지나치게 ‘바짝 다가서는’ 모습을 과장되게 나타낸 것이지만 마치 얼굴 속으로 들어갈 듯이 접근하는 모습이 생생하게 그려지는 재미있는 표현이다.
When he talks to me, he gets into my face(그는 이야기를 할 때 너무 바짝 다가선다).



Q3. take it personally
‘개인적인 공격’은 personal attack 또는 personal insult다. 하지만 ‘개인적인 공격으로 받아들이다’는 attack이나 insult를 넣지 않고 단순히 take it personally라고 표현해도 된다. 직역하면 ‘그것을[상대방의 발언을] 개인적으로 받아들이다’가 되지만 일반적으로 누구를 지칭해 한 말이 아닌데도 피해의식을 갖고 나를 비꼬는 것이라고 받아들인다는 의미다.
Don't take it personally(기분 나쁘게 받아들이지 마라 / 비꼰다고 생각하지 마라 / 너를 비난할 마음은 없었어).

Not for the first time, Israeli voters gave a firm 1.mandate to … none of their candidates. In the coming weeks, centrist Tzipi Livni and hawk Bibi Netanyahu will try to assemble a majority coalition and become prime minister. INDIA: MAY George W. Bush 10.studiously 11.cultivated this ally in the war on terror, especially after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, a free-market economist, took over in 2004.
What's at stake: The Mumbai attacks strengthened Hindu nationalists who want to confront Pakistan. But the real surprise comes from a populist Dalit(Untouchable) named Mayawati, who has charged Singh with ignoring the poor at the expense of foreign relations. If elected, she'll turn India's attention inward.


JAPAN: SEPTEMBER (OR SOONER) Tokyo has finally stepped away from its 12.unadulterated history of pacifism since World War II -but only a little. Its grand act of taking sides: helping to refuel American ships working the Afghanistan war from the Indian Ocean.
What's at stake: A defeat for Prime Minister Taro Aso's visionless Liberal Democratic Party's could halt the reconstitution of an army -and end military cooperation.

2. Monotown

3. Not into you
인기 TV드라마 ‘섹스 앤 더 시티’에서 2002년 처음 쓰인 “He's just not that into you(그는 당신에게 반하지 않았다)”의 줄임말로, 지금도 미국의 청춘 남녀들 간에 자주 쓰인다. 가령 ‘I am not into you’라고 하면 ‘(나는 당신에게 별 관심이 없으니) 싫으면 말고’라는 뜻이 된다. 요즘 청소년들의 ‘아님 말고’ 식 사고방식을 대변하는 용어로 자리 잡았다.

해설 가정법 과거완료 문장으로 ‘그녀의 국무장관’이란 힐러리가 대통령이 됐을 경우를 가리킨다. 그런 상황을 풀어 설명하면 이해가 빠르겠다.


바른 번역 힐러리가 대통령에 당선됐다면 그가 국무장관이 됐을지도 모를 일이다.
