Self/Less is a film in close step with the zeitgeist.Charming, handsome, yet deeply corrupt, Dorian Grey sold his soul to the Devil so that a painted likeness aged instead of him. Oscar Wilde’s tale of vanity and depravity resonates today in an age more than ever obsessed by youth. In Self/Less, the hedonist who stops growing old is impeccably embodied by Ben Kingsley, who lays on a New York drawl for his role as property shark Damian. Rich beyond proportion, this gentleman inhabits a huge penthouse above Central Park designed in blinding Dubai chic, including the inevitable golden doorknobs and toilet seats.

Damian is thoroughly unpleasant. In one scene with his daughter Claire (Downton Abbey’s Michelle Dockery) he flatly dismisses her charity career as not “real work”. When she protests, he offers to write a check. His employees he humiliates in lines that Kingsley delivers with so much deadpan vitriol that you feel sorry for anyone who has to deal with him.

It also transpires that Damian has cancer and his time on earth is about to be up. Since he is a fighter and scared stiff of being forgotten (worse than dead!), he decides to try an experimental genetic treatment so select and radical it costs $250 million. The concept of “shedding”, brainchild of evil British scientist Albright (Matthew Goode,) is that the mind of an old man is transferred into a young body.

While Damian’s body is disposed of, Albright switches the tycoon into the body of a 35-year-old army grunt, Mark (Ryan Reynolds). There are uncomfortable side-effects. Damian has flashbacks from Mark’s life, and starts investigating what happened to the donor of his body.

While this storyline is as far-fetched as it gets, the makers of Self/Less are on the money with the idea of life-extension. Google has just launched an immortality project, recruiting top scientists from medicine, molecular biology and genetics to “devise interventions that slow ageing”. While sci-fi concepts such as time travel or teleportation may never see the light of day, finding and disabling the switch that causes us to grow old seems comparatively realistic. The idea that there is some god-given cut-off point, a maximum biological age beyond which no human could venture, has never been conclusively demonstrated. And as our understanding of our DNA blueprint grows, so does our ability to manipulate the code.

Meanwhile, scientists are debating whether it might not become possible to create a digital copy of the human mind. Computing power is growing at such speed that it does not seem entirely inconceivable that future generations might be able to download the structure of the brain. The EU is currently ploughing €1 billion into the Human Brain Project, a digital mapping scheme that might be perceived as a first small step.

While all this may seem outlandish, one should recall that in its 1897 edition, a reputable German encyclopedia flatly stated that heavier-than-air aviation was a pipe-dream. The Wright Brothers invented the aeroplane six years later.

While Self/Less is therefore a film in close step with the zeitgeist, it does have some defects. These have less to do with the subject matter and its formulaic treatment, more with a disjunct between the characters of the “old” and “young” selves of the protagonist. Ryan Reynolds’ young Damian has little in common with the nasty old man played by Ben Kingsley. One would expect all sorts of mannerisms of the old self to shine through, but they don’t. Perhaps the sequences were not shot in chronology, making it difficult for Reynolds to model his character on Kingsley’s performance. Nevertheless, this is a fun film to watch, and it’s worth sacrificing a summer evening for the buzz.

영화 ‘셀프/리스’, 늙고 병든 주인공의 영혼을 젊은이에게 이식하는 생명연장 프로젝트의 맛보기로 재미 쏠쏠해매력적이고 핸섬하지만 타락한 도리언 그레이는 악마에게 영혼을 팔아 세월이 흘러도 늙지 않는다. 그 대신 초상화 속 그의 모습이 늙어간다. 오스카 와일드의 소설 ‘도리언 그레이의 초상’에 나오는 이야기다. 허영과 타락을 주제로 한 이 이야기는 그 어느 때보다 젊음에 집착하는 요즘 시대에 특별한 반향을 불러일으킨다. 영화 ‘셀프/리스’(국내 개봉 9월 10일)에서는 벤 킹슬리가 늙지 않는 쾌락주의자로 나온다. 그는 느릿한 뉴욕 말투로 부동산 재벌 데미안을 연기한다. 엄청난 부자인 데미안은 센트럴 파크가 내려다 보이는 초대형 펜트하우스에 산다. 호화스런 두바이 스타일로 디자인된 이 집은 문 손잡이와 변기 좌석도 번쩍이는 금도금 제품이다.

데미안은 매우 무례하다. 딸 클레어(‘다운타운 애비’의 미셸 도커리)의 자선사업이 ‘가짜’라며 비아냥거린다. 그리고 클레어가 대들자 수표로 무마하려 한다. 고용인들에게도 무표정한 얼굴로 독설을 퍼부어 보는 사람이 무안할 지경이다. 그런데 알고 보니 데미안은 암에 걸려 살 날이 얼마 안 남았다. 하지만 그는 포기를 모르는 사람이며 세상에서 잊혀지는 걸 죽기보다 더 두려워한다. 그래서 결국 비용이 2억5000만 달러나 드는 유전학적 시술을 받기로 결정한다. ‘셰딩(shedding)’이라고 불리는 이 시술은 사악한 영국 과학자 올브라이트(매튜 구드)가 개발한 것으로 늙은 사람의 영혼을 젊은 사람의 몸 속으로 이식한다는 개념을 주축으로 한다.

올브라이트는 데미안의 영혼을 35세의 건장한 군인 마크(라이언 레이놀즈)의 몸 속에 이식한다. 하지만 마크의 몸으로 다시 태어난 데미안에게 부작용이 생긴다. 그의 머릿속에 마크의 지난 일들이 자꾸 떠오른다. 그래서 그는 자신에게 몸을 준 사람에게 어떤 일이 일어났었는지 파헤치기 시작한다.

황당한 줄거리지만 ‘셀프/리스’의 제작자들은 생명연장의 개념을 제대로 짚었다. 구글은 최근 장수 프로젝트에 착수했다. 의학과 분자생물학, 유전학 분야의 최고 학자들을 동원해 ‘노화를 늦추는 기술’을 개발 중이다.

시간여행이나 순간이동 같은 공상과학적인 개념들은 영원히 실현되지 않을지도 모른다. 하지만 노화를 일으키는 스위치를 찾아내 무력화시키는 것은 비교적 현실성이 있어 보인다. 신이 정한 한계, 즉 어떤 인간도 뛰어넘을 수 없는 최대한의 생물학적 나이가 존재한다는 개념은 확실하게 입증된 적이 없다. 또한 DNA 청사진에 대한 인간의 이해가 넓어질수록 그 암호를 조작하는 능력도 더 커진다.

한편 과학자들 사이에선 인간 영혼의 디지털 카피를 만드는 게 과연 불가능한지를 놓고 논란이 인다. 컴퓨터의 능력이 놀라운 속도로 발전하는 상황에서 미래 세대가 뇌의 구조를 다운로드 받을 수도 있다는 상상이 전혀 터무니없지는 않다. 유럽연합(EU)은 ‘인간 뇌 프로젝트’에 10억 유로를 투자한다. 디지털 매핑 체계의 첫 단 계로 받아들일 수도 있다.

이 모두가 기이하게 보일지도 모른다. 하지만 독일의 한 평판 좋은 백과사전이 1897년판에서 ‘공기보다 무거운 비행기가 하늘을 날 수 있다고 생각하는 건 몽상’이라고 단정지었었다는 사실을 기억해야 한다. 그로부터 6년 후 라이트 형제가 비행기를 발명하지 않았는가?

이렇게 볼 때 ‘셀프/리스’는 시대정신에 잘 맞는 영화지만 놓친게 있다. 주제나 그것을 다루는 정형화된 방식의 문제라기보다는 주인공의 ‘나이 든’ 자아와 ‘젊은’ 자아 사이의 불일치다. 라이언 레이놀즈가 연기하는 젊은 데미안은 벤 킹슬리가 연기하는 늙고 심술궂은 데미안과 공통점이 거의 없다. 관객은 젊은 데미안에게서 원래 데미안의 고약한 버릇들이 튀어나올 것으로 예상하지만 그런 기미는 전혀 없다. 영화의 장면들이 시간의 흐름에 따라 촬영되지 않아서 레이놀즈가 자신의 캐릭터를 설정할 때 킹슬리의 연기를 참고하기 어려웠기 때문일지도 모른다. 하지만 보는 재미는 쏠쏠하다. 입소문을 믿고 초가을의 하루 저녁을 맡겨봐도 좋을 만한 작품이다.
