■ 2008년판 ‘톰과 제리’ (7월 30일자 11쪽 첫째 칼럼)

영문 And you should - if only for Pixar's exuberant introductory short, "Presto," which steals the show as a throwback to classic Warner Bros. critter capers.

번역 사례 영화 도입부에 등장하는 재기 발랄한 단편 ‘프레스토’만으로도 제값을 한다. 워너브러더스의 고전적인 깡총깡총 뛰는 동물을 연상케 하는 재치로 관객의 눈길을 끈다.

해설 critter capers는 직역하면 ‘깡총깡총 뛰어다니는 장난꾸러기 동물들’이다. 문맥상 만화영화에 대한 글이므로, 장난꾸러기 동물들이 나오는 워너브러더스의 예전 만화영화를 연상하면 된다. 즉 ‘톰과 제리’나 ‘벅스 버니’같은 만화 말이다.

■ 시벨리우스, 오바마의 숨겨둔 러닝메이트? (7월 16일자 12쪽 셋째 칼럼)

영문 ① As the governor, Sebelius has pulled off the near-impossible trick of reaching across the aisle to harness legislative consensus for her bread-and-butter agenda without compromising her progressive ideals ?long thought anathema to Kansans - or sacrificing her popularity.

번역 사례 또 주지사로서도 시벨리우스는 거의 불가능한 일을 해냈다. 캔자스에서 배척 받는 자신의 진보적 이상이나 대중적 인기를 희생하지 않으면서, 건너편에 손을 뻗쳐 최대 현안에 대한 합의를 이끌어낸 것이다.

해설 어려운 단어가 많지만 특히 reaching across the aisle은 관용적 표현으로 해석에 주의해야 한다. 의회에서 공화당과 민주당 사이의 복도 건너편에 다가간다는 의미로 ‘상대 정당과 협조를 이끌어내다’란 뜻이 숨어 있다. 그 밖에 bread-and butter는 ‘생계 수단, 필수적인 것’이다. 정치가에게 bread-and-butter agenda는 가장 중점적으로 다루는 ‘최대 현안’을 말한다. anathema to~는 ‘~를 배척하는, 무척 싫어하는’이란 뜻이다.

바른 번역 최대 현안에 대한 초당적인 합의를 이끌어낸 것이다.

영문 ② Obama could do worse than to choose a partner who's proven that she can walk the walk.

번역 사례 오바마는 걸음을 걸을 수 있음을 입증한 사람을 선택하는 것보다 훨씬 못할 수도 있었다.

해설 영어 특유의 구어적 표현이므로 직역하면 소용이 없다. 우선 뒷부분의 walk the walk는 구어적 표현으로 ‘걸음을 (실제로) 걷다’, 즉 ‘실천에 옮기다’는 뜻이다. You can talk the talk, but can you walk the walk?(말은 그럴듯한데, 실제 행동으로 옮길 수 있나)라는 표현도 있다. 또 Obama could do worse than~은 ‘오바마가 ~보다 훨씬 못할 수도 있었다’, 즉 ‘~한 게 꽤 괜찮은 선택일 것이다’라는 뜻이다. 문장을 더 간단히 바꾸면 ‘(실행력 있는) 그녀는 오바마의 파트너가 될 자질이 충분하다’는 뜻이 된다.

바른 번역 그 정도의 실행력 있는 사람이라면 부통령 후보로서 자질이 충분하다.

"Breaking dawn," the final book in the mega-successful "Twilight" series, about a sexy vampire named Edward and the girl who loves him, goes on sale Aug. 2. Author Stephenie Meyer talked to Susan Elgin about books, boys and blood:

Has there ever been an Edward in your life?

No, no, (① 그냥 바람일 뿐이죠.) I've had very typical, normal, human relationships my whole life.

No vampires?

No, none of that goofy, swoony stuff. (② 난 항상 나이에 비해 조숙했거든요.)

(③아주 생각을 많이 했나 봐요.)

I've had to. You wouldn't believe the questions I get. People want to know every single detail. You know, I majored in English, not biology.

1. 그냥 바람일 뿐이죠
매번 대표팀 선발전에서 탈락하는 40대 노장 복싱 선수에게 올림픽 금메달 획득 가능성을 묻는다면? 필경 “마음이야 굴뚝같지만 될 법이나 한 일이에요?”라고 대답할 것이다. 이 모든 것을 함축한 말이 “I wish”다. 실제로 가능한 일이 뜻대로 되기를 기대한다는 뜻의 hope와는 달리 “그렇게 되기를 바라지만 불가능한 일”이라는 뉘앙스가 강하다. 실제로 반항심 강한 사춘기 청소년들이 “I wish you were not my mom!(내 엄마가 아니었음 좋겠어!)”이라는 말로 종종 엄마의 마음에 상처를 주기도 한다.

I wish I could help you(도와주고는 싶은데 다른 할 일이 있어서…).

I wish there were no wars in the world(세상에 전쟁이 없었으면 좋겠는데…).

I wish she were a boy(사내아이로 태어났으면 좋았으련만…).

2. 나는 항상 나이에 비해 조숙했거든요.
for는 ‘~을 위해’라는 뜻 외에 ‘~에 비해’라는 의미도 갖고 있다. 특히 ‘나이에 비해’라는 뜻의 ‘for one’s age’는 하나의 관용 표현으로 자주 쓰인다.

I’m in great shape for my age(나는 나이에 비해서는 체력이 아주 좋아).

He is wise for his age(그는 나이에 비해 현명해).

She’s tall for her age(그녀는 나이에 비해 키가 큰 편이야).

3. 아주 생각을 많이 했나 봐요.
through는 ‘끝까지, 철저히’라는 의미를 갖고 있다. 따라서 think through는 ‘끝까지 생각하다, 빠뜨린 부분 없이 생각하다’는 뜻이 된다. 다시 말해 기사의 표현은 “정말 꼼꼼하게 생각을 많이 하셨네요”라는 뉘앙스를 갖는다. 반대로 ‘깊게 생각하지 않고 막연하게’라고 표현할 때는 ‘without thinking it through’라고 하면 된다.

We can’t afford a mistake, so think things through and make sure you have everything ready(실수하면 안 되니까 빠진 것 없이 잘 생각해서 만반의 준비를 갖춰).
