be heartbroken, have heartache라고 흔히 표현하지만 퀸시 존스는 My heart went out to her라고 말했다. heart가 여기서는 동정심을 뜻해 ‘그녀에게 동정심이 갔다, 딱하다는 생각이 들었다’는 뜻이다. heart goes out to의 형태로 ‘깊은 동정심을 나타내다, 동정을 금치 못하다, 애착을 갖다, 딱하게 여기다’는 뜻으로 흔히 쓰인다. My heart goes out to the patients는 ‘환자들을 보니 안됐다는 생각이 든다’는 의미다.
한편 우리는 문상을 갔을 때 보통 ‘얼마나 애통하십니까, 뭐라 위로할 말이 없습니다’고 말하는데 My heart goes out to you가 이에 해당하는 표현이다. ‘깊은 애도를 표합니다, 안타까운 마음 금할 길이 없습니다’ 정도의 의미다.
My heart goes out to the people who were hurt or killed, and to their families(사상자와 그 가족들에게 동정심이 든다).

Q2. 바짝 얼었다
얼었다는 말은 물론 ‘겁을 먹었다’는 뜻이다. 그렇다면 be scared [frightened] 정도로 표현할 수 있다. 하지만 퀸시 존스는 scared to death라고 표현해 그 의미를 더 강조했다. ‘죽을 정도로 겁을 먹었다, 겁에 질려 사색이 됐다’ 정도의 뜻이다. 우리도 강조의 의미로 ‘죽겠다, 죽을 지경이다’는 말을 많이 쓰는데 영어에서는 to death가 같은 효과를 나타낸다. ‘죽을 만큼, 심하게’라는 의미다. 가령 bored to death라고 하면 ‘지루해 죽겠다’는 뜻이고 worried to death는 ‘걱정돼 죽겠다’는 말이다.
I'm worried to death that he's been hurt(그가 다쳐 걱정돼 죽겠다).
He scared me to death(그가 무서워 죽을 뻔했어).
I was scared to death when I saw a shark while swimming(수영하다가 상어를 봤을 때 정말 무서워 죽는 줄 알았다).
한편 to death에는 ‘죽을 때까지, 죽음에 이르도록’이라는 뜻도 있다. 이때는 구타나 총질 등 실제 상해 행위가 앞에 온다. ‘I Love You to Death(바람둥이 길들이기)’라는 코미디 영화가 있었는데 바람둥이 남편을 부인이 죽이려 한다는 줄거리다. 직역하자면 ‘죽도록 사랑한다’와 ‘사랑으로 죽인다’는 두 가지 뜻이 다 가능한데 그런 이중 의미를 이용한 말장난인 셈이다.
beat someone to death(때려 죽이다), bleed to death(출혈과다로 숨지다), burn someone to death(태워 죽이다), choke someone to death(목 졸라 죽이다), crush someone to death(압사시키다), drown someone to death(익사시키다).

Q3. 친해지다
make friends, get closer 정도의 구문을 쓸 수 있지만 단순히 친해지는 정도가 아니라 ‘의기투합하다, 죽이 맞다’는 뜻으로는 hit it off가 더 많이 쓰인다. 이 구문은 원래 hit it이었는데 18세기 중반에 off가 뒤에 추가됐다고 한다. 여기서 it은 ‘뜻, 마음’ 정도의 의미며 off는 ‘잘 맞아떨어진다’는 강조의 뉘앙스를 갖는다. 표적을 정확하게 맞혀 떨어뜨리는(off) 모습을 연상하면 될 듯하다. 가령 ‘누구와 처음부터 죽이 잘 맞는다’고 할 때는 hit it off with someone right from the beginning이라고 표현하면 된다. I was so glad that our parents hit it off는 “부모님이 서로 마음이 잘 맞아서 기뻤다”는 뜻이다.
I just don't seem to hit it off with him(나는 그 사람과 왠지 잘 안 맞는 것 같아).
I've been in this company for 10 years and have never hit it off with the boss(이 회사에 10년 동안 근무했어도 상사와 뜻이 맞아본 적이 한 번도 없어).

Pitfalls of Translation실수하기 쉬운 번역 사례

‘세상은 모두에게 열려 있단다’

영문 What a fine new addition I have to my mother's arsenal of aphorisms: Son, I can (and probably will) say to you, Barack Obama faced hurdles but succeeded, and you can, too.

번역사례 이제 외할머니의 금언 목록에 이 멋진 말을 추가해도 될지 모르겠다. “아들아, 오바마는 많은 장애물에 직면했지만 성공했단다. 이젠 너도 가능하다고 말할 수 있게 됐다”고 말이다.

해설 'my mother's arsenal of aphorisms'에서 ‘my’는 ‘mother's arsenal of aphorism’(어머니가 아들에게 들려주는 금언) 전체를 수식하는 말이다. 따라서 번역 예처럼 ‘my mother’를 (아들 입장에서 봤을 때) ‘외할머니’로 해석한 것은 잘못이다. 그러므로 ‘(어머니인) 내가 아들에게 들려주는 금언’으로 옮겨야 옳다.

바른 번역 이제 내 아들에게 들려주는 금언 목록에 이 멋진 말을 추가해도 될지 모르겠다.

오바마 지지자들의 악몽

번역사례 오바마는 캘리포니아·뉴욕·일리노이 등 대규모 민주당 강세 주에서 매케인과의 표차를 압도적으로 벌려 일반투표에선 이기고도 2000년 대선 당시의 앨 고어처럼 선거대학에 입학이 거부됐다.

해설 Electoral College는 미국의 대통령을 뽑는 ‘선거인단’을 가리킨다. 영문에선 선거인단 수에서 밀린 것을 두고 “Electoral College에 입학이 거부됐다(denied admission to the Electoral College)”고 재미있게 표현했다. 물론 일부로 오바마가 지는 시나리오를 가상하고 쓴 글이다.

바른 번역 선거인단 수에서 밀리면서 2000년 대선 당시의 앨 고어와 같은 처지가 됐다.
