Solomon’s team asked other UK-based facial mapping experts to construct composites which they deemed attractive using the EFIT-V Photofit computer programme, usually utilised by British police to produce images of wanted criminals.

Specific facial features which were taken into account by the software included nose width and length, lip thickness and hairline.

The generated images were judged by 100 people who rated them for attractiveness. Scientists then used this feedback to design the most desirable male and female faces.

Dr Solomon said the study revealed “interesting results” about what Brits consider to be “the epitome of beauty”, and notable differences between a man and woman’s perception of attractiveness.

“For the male face of beauty, women drew a more feminine face than men. Women rate a softer jaw-line, slimmer face, fuller lips and clean-shaven look as the most attractive, compared to the more masculine appearance that is considered the most attractive by men,” he said.

“Interestingly, for the female face of beauty women rated a sexier appearance as the most beautiful than their male counterparts - women perceived fuller lips, a slimmer face, larger eyes and higher cheekbones as the most beautiful, more so than the male population.”

He said these results are specific to British perceptions and acknowledged the results would undoubtedly be different for Asian or African populations.

The study, commissioned by Samsung, included a survey for who is believed to be the most attractive male and female celebrities. Actress Natalie Portman and model David Gandy came out on top.

영국인의 이상형 컴퓨터 합성 이미지로 보여줘…아름다움에 대한 남녀 인식 차이 드러나최근 영국의 과학자들은 영국인이 가장 ‘이상적’이라고 생각하는 얼굴의 컴퓨터 합성 이미지를 공개했다. 얼굴 매핑(facial mapping)의 세계적 권위자인 크리스 솔로몬 박사가 이끄는 연구팀이 2개월 동안 연구한 결과다. 이 팀은 영국의 얼굴 매핑 전문가들에게 가장 매력적이라고 생각되는 얼굴의 컴퓨터 합성 이미지를 제작해 달라고 요청했다. 경찰이 지명수배자의 몽타주를 만드는 데 이용하는 EFIT-V 포토핏 프로그램을 이용했다. 코의 넓이와 길이, 입술의 두께, 헤어라인 같은 얼굴의 특징들을 고려했다. 이렇게 만들어진 이미지들을 100명의 판정단에게 보여주고 매력도를 평가했다. 과학자들은 그 결과를 바탕으로 가장 이상적인 남녀의 얼굴을 디자인했다.

솔로몬 박사는 이 연구가 영국인이 ‘미의 전형’이라고 생각하는 것에 관한 ‘흥미로운 결과’를 보여줬으며 아름다움에 대한 남녀의 인식에 뚜렷한 차이가 있다고 말했다.

“아름다운 남성의 얼굴과 관련해 여성은 남성에 비해 더 여성적인 모습을 머릿속에 그렸다. 여성은 남성의 부드러운 턱선과 갸름한 얼굴형, 도톰한 입술, 말끔하게 면도한 모습을 가장 매력적이라고 생각했다. 반면 남성은 좀 더 남성적인 모습이 매력적이라고 생각했다.”

솔로몬 박사는 “흥미롭게도 여성들이 생각하는 아름다운 여성의 얼굴은 남성들이 생각하는 것보다 더 섹시한 모습이었다”며 “여성들은 도톰한 입술과 갸름한 얼굴, 큰 눈, 튀어나온 광대뼈를 매력적이라고 생각하는 경향이 남성보다 더 두드러졌다”고 밝혔다.

솔로몬 박사는 이런 결과가 영국인에게 국한된 것이며 아시아인이나 아프리카인을 대상으로 조사를 실시할 경우 분명히 다른 결과가 나올 것이라고 말했다. 삼성에서 의뢰한 이 연구에는 유명인사 중 가장 매력적인 남성과 여성이 누구인지를 묻는 조사도 포함됐다. 여성 중에는 배우 나탈리 포트먼이, 남성 중에는 모델 데이비드 갠디가 1위를 차지했다.
