[Young journalist Cheon Ye On] Alibaba Cloud, an affiliate of the Chinese Alibaba group activates its second Korean data center.

Alibaba Cloud unveiled its plan to activate a secondary data center to cope with sudden increase of Korean AI intra demand that is followed by generative AI service implement anticipation.

Alibaba Cloud Intelligence Korea general branch office president, Yongjoon Yoon said “secondary korea data center is an important investigative momentum about how Alibaba group sees korean market in a strategic way”, adding on his words by saying “We expect Korea to take a crucial role for Alibaba Cloud’s development contribution in Asia·Pacific region.”

He also introduced that the establishment of the data center is related to the plan that was announced as Alibaba group investing 380 billion yuan (approximately 76 trillion won) in AI·cloud infra for the next 3 years.

Alibaba Cloud, the company that branched out to the Korean market in 2016, started earnest infra operation by building Korea's first data center in March of 2022.

Their plan is to provide suitable products for AI applications, such as cloud native, big data, and databases throughout the secondary data center.

The company dismissed concerns about Chinese companies’ data security problems by obtaining multiple security authentications.

Alibaba Cloud Intelligence head solution architect, Jongjin Lim had spoken that “It is difficult to talk about China’s data security law, but based on global compliance standards, it satisfies over 150 measures” and “We can confidently claim that we will be capable of serving potential customers as well.”

According to the question asking whether it is sure that domestic data are not being exposed externally to other countries, he answered “In Personal information & Information Security Management System (ISMS) that was claimed in 2023 December, it is necessary to not take Korean data out” and added on his wording by saying “Korean data are not exposed internationally.”
