[Young journalist Siwon Lee] The Korean Central News Agency reported on the 24th that the Korea Meteorological Administration had developed a new weather forecast system.

The communication service stated that “By applying AI to weather forecast, the accuracy was improved as well as intelligentization, atomization, and more precise forecasting."

North Korea praised the system, saying “Scientific informational value that can develop one nation’s economy reliably and can quickly react to natural disasters has been created”, as it was registered as this year’s top ten information technology.

However, the accuracy of the AI that North Korea asserts that it has introduced in the State Hydro-Meteorological Administration has not been verified.

North Korea is emphasizing preparation for abnormal climate by using scientific technology after experiencing deluge in the northwestern region. At that time, Kim Jong Un, the Chairperson of North Korea, was furious at not being able to accurately forecast the deluge.

North Korea also impelled to add an AI related department in universities, while also exposing the scenery of using ‘OpenAI’ from the US, showing North Korea is consistently showing an interest towards developing their IT technology.
