A former worker involved in Japan’s Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant cleanup efforts has reportedly been diagnosed with cancer related to radiation exposure. This is the first case of cancer attributed to the nuclear plant cleanup.

The man, who was in his 30s at the time of the plant’s recovery project, was diagnosed with leukemia, according to NHK. The country’s health ministry approved his worker compensation, the report added.

In March 2011, an earthquake-triggered tsunami disabled the power supply and cooling mechanisms at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, causing a meltdown of three nuclear reactors and release of radioactive materials in the first three days.

The plant’s operator, Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), said that over 44,000 people were involved in the cleanup work following the meltdown. The diagnosed worker, who was not identified, is now 41 and worked on cleanup efforts at reactors No.3 and No.4 from 2012 to 2013.

According to the company, the radiation exposure dose limit at the plant site is 1.71 mSv per month, and in August, TEPCO stated that the average worker’s radiation exposure was at .31 mSv. However, the worker diagnosed with leukemia had accumulated exposed doses of 16 mSv, Asahi Shimbun reported.

In September, the Asahi Shimbun reported that a person living near the plant was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. However, the prefectural government committee investigating health problems following the disaster said at the time that the thyroid cancer cases were not caused by the nuclear power plant accident.

일본 NHK 방송에 따르면 원전 복구작업 당시 30대였던 그는 백혈병 진단을 받았다. 후생노동성은 산업재해를 인정하고 그에 따른 보상을 승인했다.

2011년 3월 강진에 따른 쓰나미가 덮치면서 후쿠시마 제1원전의 전원 공급이 중단되고 냉각 시스템이 고장나면서 원자로 3기의 노심이 용융돼 첫 3일 동안 방사능 물질이 유출됐다.

후쿠시마 제1원전을 운영하는 TEPCO는 그 사고 후 4만4000명 이상이 복구작업에 참여했다고 밝혔다. 백혈병 진단을 받은 전 직원은 현재 41세이며 2012∼13년 원자로 3호기와 4호기의 복구작업에 참여한 것으로 알려졌다.

TEPCO에 따르면 후쿠시마 제1원전의 방사능 피폭량 허용 한계는 월 1.71밀리시버트(m㏜)다. 지난 8월 TEPCO는 복구작업 인력의 평균 피폭량은 월 0.31m㏜라고 밝혔다. 그러나 백혈병 진단을 받은 전 직원은 누적 피폭량이 16m㏜였다고 아사히신문이 전했다.

그 신문에 따르면 지난 9월엔 후쿠시마 제1원전 부근에 사는 한 사람이 갑상선암 진단을 받았다. 그러나 원전 사고 후의 건강 문제를 조사하는 후쿠시마 현 위원회는 그 갑상선암의 원인이 원전 사고가 아니라고 밝혔다.
