[Young journalist Hojun Lee] Recently, smart glasses developed by Google in collaboration with Samsung Electronics were "unexpectedly unveiled", Apple is also reportedly planning to release their own smart glasses by the end of the year.

According to Bloomberg on the 22nd (local time), Apple aims to begin mass production of smart glasses prototypes by the end of this year, targeting a launch in late next year to compete with Ray Ban sunglasses of Meta.

Apple's smart glasses are expected to feature a camera, microphone, and speakers, allowing them to analyze the outside world. Apple's voice assistant "Siri" will recognize this information and provide relevant feedback to the user.

In addition to making phone calls, the glasses are expected to to support music playback, real-time translation, and navigation functions.

Apple's ultimate goal is to release augmented reality(AR) glasses.

On the 20th, Google showcased AI-powered smart glasses during its annual conference. The prototype glasses were co-developed with Samsung Electronics.
Shahram Izadi, Vice President of Android XR at Google, introduced the glasses by saying, “We’re bringing the power of Gemini Live — a natural form of AI — to where you are,” and added, “Wearing these glasses feels like gaining superpowers.”

The AI can recognize visuals in real-time as if it were seeing, enabling it to converse with people. Through the camera embedded in the glasses, the AI can understand the surrounding environment and provide real-time translations displayed as subtitles.

Meta has been releasing smart glasses in partnership with Ray-Ban since 2021. These glasses include features such as photo and video capture, phone calls, music playback, and basic AI capabilities.
