[Young journalist Hojun Lee] OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, is rolling out a new safeguard that analyzes users’ usage patterns to estimate their age and restrict access to certain harmful content they are identified as minors.

On the 20th (local time), OpenAI announced on its blog that it has activated an “age prediction” feature in ChatGPT, allowing the system to determine whether an account holder is likely under the age of 18 and to apply age-appropriate experiences and safeguards for teenagers.

According to the company, the age prediction model introduced in ChatGPT determines whether a user is under 18 by comprehensively analyzing factors such as the account’s creation date, the user’s typical activity times, and changes in usage patterns over time.

However, the company added that users who are incorrectly classified as being under 18 by the age prediction model can verify their age through the identity verification service “Persona” and regain full access.

Previously, OpenAI faced lawsuits from bereaved families following reports that some teenagers experienced severe mental distress after interacting with ChatGPT, with tragic outcomes.
