[Young journalist Kim Jiyul] The story of a man who saved his life after artificial intelligence(AI) ‘Chat GPT’ pointed out a rare condition that went undetected in a hospital in the UK is the talk of the town. 

According to The Sun in England, 17-year-old Karlan Yies of Cirencester, Gloucestershire, visited a local hospital after his cold symptoms worsened. 

Kalan complained of abnormalities such as weakening arm and leg strength, blue feet, and difficulty in movement, and his doctor diagnosed him with Raynaud’s syndrome, a type of blood circulation disorder. He also advised him to wear gloves to maintain body temperature. 

However, Kalan suspected that his body was experiencing much more serious problems, and detailed his symptoms in ChatGPT. 

ChatGPT then responded that his symptoms could be ‘Gillian-Barre syndrome(GBS). 

GBS is a rare incurable disease in which the immune system attacks the peripheral nerves and causes paralysis. If paralysis spreads upward, the function of respiratory muscles stops, which can even threaten life, and thus it is known that prompt treatment is needed. 

Surprised by this, Kalan informed his mother and immediately headed to the emergency room. After undergoing additional tests at the hospital, Kalan was actually confirmed to have a GBS. 

He was transferred to the Royal Hospital for emergency treatment, including plasma exchange. He is currently recovering and is expected to be discharged soon. 

In an interview with local media, Kalan said,”As the symptoms continued to worsen, I had an anxious mind”, adding “When I entered it into AI, it identified GBS.” 

“The fact that we had to rely on AI to diagnose properly is crazy”, he said. “Trust in the entire NHS(British National Medical Service) has not been shaken, but it will affect local general practitioners(GP).”
