Q1.We didn't know what we were getting into
“상황이 어떻게 돌아가는지” 다시 말해 “돌아가는 상황”은 what's going on이다. 가령 자신이 모르는 무슨 일이 벌어졌을 때 What's going on? 이라고 물을 수 있다. 다시 말해 내가 없을 때 벌어진 상황을 묻는 질문이다.
하지만 살다 보면 자신이 직접 어떤 행동을 하면서도 무슨 일인지 모르거나, ‘어어’ 하면서 끌려가다 보니 생각지도 않은 결과가 나올 때가 있다. 이럴 때 I don't know what I뭢 getting into라는 표현이 제격이다. 직역하면 “내가 어디에 발을 들여놓는지 모른다”지만 “내가 무슨 정신으로 이런 일을 한 거지”라는 뉘앙스가 있다. 가령 이번 금융위기 직전에 퇴직금을 몽땅 주식에 투자했다가 날렸을 때 ‘Oh great, what have I got myself into?(이런 도대체 내가 무슨 짓을 한 거야?)라고 탄식할 만하다.

Q2. would know better than
‘생각이 모자라다, 분별력이 없다’는 의미의 단어는 indiscrete, senseless, imprudent가 있지만 일상 대화체에선 흔히 should know better라는 표현을 쓴다. 가령 You should know better than that은 직역하면 “그보다는 더 잘 알 텐데”가 되지만 실상은 “그런 멍청한 짓을 하다니, 그런 걸 몰라, 좀 더 생각을 했어야지” 정도를 뜻한다. 또 누군가 나이를 물을 때 old enough to know better라고 대답하면 “좀 더 분별있게 처신할 나이가 됐다”는 뜻이 된다.
You should know better than to trust such a dubious story(그런 의심스러운 이야기를 믿을 만큼 멍청하지는 않잖아).

3. Dismal Science
19세기 영국의 사상가 토머스 칼라일(1795~1881)이 비관적 전망만 내놓는 ‘경제학’을 비하하며 쓴 표현이다. 앞서 고전학파 경제학자 토머스 맬서스가 ‘식량증가는 인구증가를 따라잡지 못하므로 결국 기아가 초래된다’는 인구론을 내놓자 경제학을 그렇게 폄하했다. 경기침체를 막지도, 경제행위의 결과를 제대로 예측하지도 못하는 작금의 경제학자들을 볼 때 썩 틀린 말은 아니다. 지난주 뉴스위크 기사(‘경제학은 죽었다’)에서도 경제학을 ‘음울한 학문’으로 지칭하는 대목이 나왔다(3월 18일자 23쪽).

라운드하다 보면 빗맞은 공이 옆 홀이나 앞 홀의 플레이어 쪽으로 날아가는 경우가 간혹 있다. 이런 상황에서 우리나라 골퍼들은 다급한 경고성 외침으로 흔히 “볼(ball)”이라고 소리친다. 이럴 때 정확한 영어 표현은 “포어(Fore)”다. 이때 fore는 ‘전방을 조심하라’는 ‘look out before’ 또는 ‘beware before’에서 ‘be’를 뺀 것이다.

이 용어는 본래 스코틀랜드 포병이 포를 쏠 때 전방으로 돌진하는 아군 보병을 향해 포탄에 맞지 않도록 조심하라고 외친 데서 유래했다. 이 군사용어를 골프용어에 차용했다. Fore 외에 ‘look out!’ 또는 ‘duck!’을 쓰기도 한다. 앞 조에 여성 골퍼가 끼어 있을 때 행여 Fore를 잘못 발음해 ‘whore(매춘부)’로 들리면 봉변(?)을 당할지도 모르니 주의를 기울여야 한다.

한국인의 경우 두 단어를 구분해 발음하기가 쉽지 않기 때문이다. 나라 밖 골프장에서 혹여 ‘포어!’라는 소리를 듣게 되거든 즉시 주저앉아 머리를 감싸고(duck and cover your head) 위험으로부터 자신의 신체를 보호하시라.
