[Young journalist Oh Sihyun] As the creation of AI videos in the style of Japanese animation, following the trend of “Ghibli style artwork,” becomes actively widespread, animation studio Studio Ghibli has moved to put the brakes on it.

TechCrunch, a U.S. information technology (IT) media outlet, reported on the 3rd (local time) that CODA (Content Overseas Distribution Association) recently sent an open letter to OpenAI. The letter demanded that the company refrain from using member companies’ content without permission for its newly launched video generation service, ‘Sora 2.’

CODA also requested that OpenAI respond properly to member companies’ complaints and inquiries regarding copyright infringement related to Sora 2.

CODA stated, “We have confirmed that Sora 2 generates a large number of videos similar to existing Japanese content,” adding that it believes this is the result of using Japanese content as AI training data.

The organization further argued that “in situations where specific copyrighted works are reproduced or generated similarly, as with Sora 2, acts of copying during the training process may constitute copyright infringement.”

CODA also addressed OpenAI’s adoption of an opt-out system that requires copyright holders to request content not be used, emphasizing that “under Japanese copyright law, prior permission is required for the use of copyrighted works,” and that “there is no system allowing liability for infringement to be waived through post-objection measures.”

Since OpenAI released Sora 2 in September, users have been sharing AI-generated videos copying popular brands and animated characters.
